Amy L. Sierzega (she/her/hers) is an elementary general, instrumental, and early childhood music educator in Ann Arbor, MI. She earned a Master's degree in Music Education from Michigan State University (MSU), where she also completed her Bachelor's degree in Music Education.
Teaching Ms. Sierzega teaches pK-5 elementary general music and beginning band in Ann Arbor, MI, and early childhood music classes through Eastern Michigan University’s Community Music Academy. Through Eastern Michigan University, she has also guest lectured in undergraduate courses for elementary education majors about elementary general music practices. Ms. Sierzega holds a Level I certification in early childhood music and Level I & II certifications in elementary general music through the Gordon Institute for Music Learning (GIML). A trained Responsive Classroom teacher, Ms. Sierzega is passionate about implementing developmentally appropriate practices and teacher language that honors students' identities. |
Service
Ms. Sierzega currently serves on the board of directors for GIML as chair of the membership commission. She is currently the Interim Conductor & Music Director for the Washtenaw Community Concert Band, for which she has previously served as an assistant conductor and board member. In recognition of Ms. Sierzega's committee-oriented service as an early career teacher through the Michigan Music Education Association, she was the recipient of the Hilda Humphreys Service Award at the 2019 Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids, MI, and the MSU Cynthia Taggart Fellowship Award in 2020. |
Research & Presentations
Ms. Sierzega's research and research interests pertain to elementary general music teaching practice, culturally responsive pedagogy, and musicianship identity development. She has presented research at the GIML International Conference, workshops for the Michigan Chapter of GIML, and practitioner presentations at the Michigan Music Conference. Ms Sierzega has facilitated professional development sessions for the elementary music departments in the Ann Arbor Public Schools and Livonia Public Schools, and has guest lectured in collegiate music education courses across the United States. |
